FOTv 6.0: Should Jessica Lee Take The SPHR? …and Beauty Queens Who Sue…

missamerica

FOTv is back, and like George Stephanopoulos, we’re only asking the toughest questions.  You might think
that means a show devoted to the state of healthcare or whether the economy has finally bounced, but we’ll leave that to the other people.  You know, the brainiacs…

Instead, we’ve got William Tincup of Starr Tincup and Michael VanDervort of The Human Race Horses joining us to discuss the following “Face the Nation” type issues:

–Is it worth Jessica’s time to take the SPHR?…

–Is being likable is a core competency of performance?…

–Should beauty queens should be allowed to sue for religious discrimination?….and

–Have state governments made mockeries of themselves with the move to the 4-day work week?…

Give it a spin and hit us in the comments, at least on the first question of whether an up and comer like JLee should take the SPHR…

  2. Love the video. It’s nice to put faces (and personalities) to the bloggers & twitterers you follow..
As for the SPHR, I think additional certifications, degrees etc., can only help you. More education/training is always a good thing. If some people find it arrogant/presumptuous to have extra letters after your name, you can always drop it- but you CAN’T go the other way and just throw it in.

Yes, education is always a good thing Jessica. MHO, those who tend to disparage certification or accreditation, are often those who disparage most forms of education.
    Good luck with it.

I strongly, adamantly, disagree with Caitrin and Karen. It’s so simple to say “it can’t hurt.” Well, duh, as long as it is costless. But there’s the rub, it is not costless. The amount of money, time, effort, and mental capacity matters. Opportunity costs matter.
This is not such a simple question. I’m going to say, provisionally, NO. Do not take the SPHR. At least not until you’re sure it’s the most important thing you can do right now to improve your long-term career prospects.
My guess, based on your writings online, is that you are a smart and capable person. If you are ambitious enough, you should be thinking about getting out of HR. Given the current nature of most businesses, where HR is one of the hardest places to make an impact from, you should be thinking about getting into another area of business. Your ties to HR will not abandon you, and you can likely do more to promote the value of HR from the outside than you ever could from the inside. The SPHR will not help you do this.

  8. Evaluate SPHR for what it is–then decide. I have a strong bent in HR Development and Talent Acq, but when I took the exam had little experience in comp, ben, employee relations, unions etc. It gave me a broad overview and helped me to learn the basics of all of HR to support when I need a little comp, a little union etc. If that will help you, then go for it.
